Best Candidates
In most dental practices, nitrous oxide gas is among the most popular sedation techniques available. It can be safely used on most patients, both adults and children. During your consultation, your dentist will go through your medical history, current medications, and any questions or concerns you may have to make sure nitrous oxide is the best choice. N2O sedation may be used during most procedures and is typically used along with local anesthesia to maximize comfort. Nitrous oxide gas can also be added to standard dental examinations or cleanings if you have dental anxieties or fears that make these appointments stressful for you. Nitrous oxide gas may not be recommended if you have difficulty breathing through your nose, extreme phobias, have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), or certain other conditions.
What to Expect
For your appointment, we will invite you to settle into one of our massaging treatment chairs, then you can put on a pair of Beats headphones and MINT sunglasses. Before your procedure begins, a nasal hood will be placed over your face to administer the nitrous oxide gas. While you breathe normally to inhale the gas, it should start to take effect quickly. Your team will monitor your response to the sedation and vital signs, adjusting the volume as needed during your appointment so you remain comfortable. Most patients feel tingling in their legs and arms, as well as a feeling of warmth, vibration, euphoria, or well-being as the sedation starts to work. Nitrous oxide is normally combined with a local anesthesia, such as lidocaine, to numb the area(s) being treated. After the procedure is complete, the gas will be turned off and the effects should quickly wear off.
Treatment Aftercare
Nitrous oxide sedation usually needs a very short recovery period as the gas leaves your body after a few minutes. You should be able to drive and get back to your regular day when you leave our office. Most patients have no side effects, but it is possible to experience temporary headaches, chills, sweating, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. Please contact MINT dentistry if you have any concerns or side effects that last longer than a few days. To minimize your risk of nausea and vomiting, our team suggests you eat a light snack before your appointment and wait at least three hours after you leave before eating a large meal.
