CrownLengthening
About Crown Lengthening
Improving your smile is not always as simple as a whitening treatment or teeth straightening. Overgrown gums can hide your sexy teeth. The board-certified dentists at MINT dentistry are skilled in crown lengthening to improve your oral health and smile. Crown lengthening (despite the name) doesn't actually involve making the tooth itself longer. A clearer name would be "tooth exposure” because soft tissue is removed to show more of the tooth, making your teeth look longer. We may suggest crown lengthening to improve the appearance of your smile or if not enough of your tooth is visible to hold a filling, crown, or other restoration. To find out if crown lengthening could improve your oral health and appearance, schedule a consultation at MINT dentistry in Conroe, TX.

Best Candidates
Ideal candidates for crown lengthening have good oral health, especially the gums. Gum disease and other periodontal conditions will be treated first and then crown lengthening can be scheduled. Most often, crown lengthening is performed for cosmetic reasons to improve a "gummy" smile. Excess gum tissue will be excised to improve the ratio of gums to enamel for a higher gumline. However, crown lengthening may also be required to perform a restoration. Your dentist might recommend crown lengthening to reveal more enamel to place a filling, bridge, or crown. During a consultation at our well-appointed facility, a board-certified dental professional will assess your condition and medical history to decide if crown lengthening is appropriate.
What to Expect
MINT dentistry begins all procedures with our experienced team making sure you're entirely at ease. Our well-appointed treatment rooms all have Beats headphones, MINT sunglasses, and flat-screen televisions to help you stay relaxed throughout your treatment. Before the procedure begins, we will numb your gum tissue with a local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. MINT dentistry also offers several sedation dentistry options. These options will be reviewed in advance at your consultation. After you are ready, your doctor will begin to remove a small amount of the gum tissue slowly and gradually to reveal more enamel and an even gumline. When we have completed the crown lengthening procedure, we will stop the bleeding by sealing the gum tissue and then rinsing your mouth.
Treatment Aftercare
If sedation was used during your procedure, you will need to have a responsible friend or family member take you home. Your mouth will probably feel swollen and sore after crown lengthening. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers should help to reduce your discomfort. In some cases, we may prescribe pain medication and/or antibiotics. We recommend you eat a soft food diet and stay hydrated after crown lengthening. You should clean your mouth with mouthwash and gentle brushing. Avoid flossing until a team member tells you it's safe. A second appointment at our office will be scheduled so our team can check to see that your gums are healing properly.
