About Scaling and Root Planing
MINT dentistry in Conroe, TX wants to help all of our patients have a beautiful smile that lasts a long time. We prefer to stay one step ahead of dental conditions with proactive oral healthcare, like exams and cleanings, but if you have signs of gum disease, your normal cleaning twice a year might need extra help. MINT dentistry utilizes advanced tools and techniques to address gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, with scaling and root planing. SRP (scaling and root planing) is a simple treatment that is performed by a board-certified MINT dentist to help eliminate gum disease by cleaning out buildup that has accumulated below the gumline. This advanced treatment cleans out the gum pockets, then the enamel is planed (smoothed) to reduce new buildup. If you have reason to believe you are suffering from the beginning stages of gum disease, contact us to make an appointment at our state-of-the-art practice in Conroe, TX. Whether your mouth is already healthy or you have signs of gum disease, we can help you achieve a sexy, attractive smile with both preventive and advanced treatments.

Best Candidates
During your annual exam, one of our skilled dental professionals will measure the depth of your gum pockets. If the pockets (sulcus) are greater than three millimeters, a scaling and root planing treatment may be recommended. This treatment helps to clean out your gum pockets and reduce their depth by removing built-up tartar and plaque beneath the gumline, which leads to the first stage of gum disease (gingivitis). Some of the early symptoms of gum disease are chronic bad breath, teeth that feel loose, plus gums that are swollen, tender, bleed, look red, and are pulling away from the teeth. When gum disease is diagnosed in the earliest stage, one or more SRP treatment can improve symptoms, but if it has progressed to later stages (periodontitis or advanced periodontitis), you might need more extensive treatments.
What to Expect
A deep periodontal cleaning with scaling and root planing (SRP) is performed in our practice with your gums numbed using local anesthesia. Your team of MINT dental professionals can also review stronger sedation techniques for dental fears or anxiety. To start your SRP treatment, we'll ask you to sit back and relax in an extremely comfortable, massage-style chair. Once you've put on a set of Beats headphones and selected some music, we'll give you some sleek MINT sunglasses to protect your eyes. Next, we will administer your anesthesia to keep you comfortable and relaxed during your procedure. Once you've been prepped, one of our board-certified dentists will use a scaling instrument to clean out the plaque and tartar that have built up in your gum pockets. We will then smooth or plane the exterior of your teeth to eliminate the most common places where plaque and tartar build up.
Treatment Aftercare
Immediately following your appointment, you will probably have extra sensitivity, as well as temporary numbness from the local anesthetic. One of our MINT specialists might write a prescription for antibiotics to help fight any residual infection in your mouth. You should follow a good oral care routine at home, which includes daily flossing and brushing to keep your mouth healthy and bright. You should continue to schedule visits every six months so we can assess the health of your gums and teeth. Depending on the way your gums respond to your first treatment, your dentist may suggest a second procedure to fully restore your oral health.
